                <description>ePrevent, The Impact of Sound

In my profession, I regularly encounter people who are influenced by different types of sounds. There are pleasant sounds, unpleasant sounds, loud sounds, and soft sounds. But when are sounds perceived as loud, harmful, or bothersome?

With over 30 years of experience in my field, I have witnessed numerous variations of sounds. During the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, I began to realize that people were becoming increasingly sensitive to sounds. Sounds from the outside, such as traffic, barking dogs, wind turbines, construction sites, and playing children, and indoor sounds, such as lively children, noisy neighbors slamming doors and cupboards, neighbor disputes, loud music, and even sounds of neighbors engaging in intimate activities.

The trend of replacing carpet with hardwood, laminate, PVC, or tiles has led to new challenges in our living environment. The attractiveness and modern comfort of hard flooring options have tempted many to make these choices. Nevertheless, problems have arisen, with noise pollution becoming a significant and widespread issue.

In the Netherlands, an estimated one million people experience noise disturbances from neighbors walking on hard floors, moving chairs, and engaging in other daily activities. The sound of footsteps and moving furniture on hard floors can easily penetrate buildings and reach adjacent homes. This can lead to frustration, stress, and even conflicts between neighbors.

This noise disturbance is not limited to hard flooring; it can also be exacerbated by inadequate sound insulation in older buildings. Therefore, there is a growing demand for soundproofing measures and solutions, such as the use of sound-absorbing underlays, carpets or rugs in strategic locations, and even building regulations prescribing the use of sound-absorbing materials.

It is of great importance to consider the needs and expectations of both homeowners and neighbors when choosing flooring and to encourage open communication to prevent conflicts. Landlords and property managers can also consider implementing soundproofing measures in apartment complexes to improve harmony among residents. Finding a balance between personal comfort and respect for others in shared living environments is essential so that everyone can enjoy their homes without unnecessarily disturbing others.

I myself have experienced noise disturbance from a barking dog several houses away. At that time, I was very tired and stressed, although I hesitate to label it officially. Nevertheless, I had to carry on. The neighbor, who lived alone with her dog, often put the animal in the yard because she herself was bothered by the barking. This reduced her own disturbance but created disturbances for twenty surrounding homes. At one point, I even heard barking when the dog was silent. It had lodged itself in my mind! This was a learning moment for me, and I was startled by the power of sound.

In various wars, sound has been used as a weapon or as a means of torture. Different countries have employed sound as a weapon by directing powerful low-frequency sound waves at the enemy. Initially, this caused irritation, but over time, the enemy troops developed physical ailments such as disorientation, insomnia, high blood pressure, and even heart failure. Ultrasonic weapons were also used to affect enemies by firing powerful high-pitched tones at them, causing disorientation, intense headaches, and nausea. Even torture with sound was applied by subjecting prisoners to extremely loud noises for weeks, leading to suicide attempts and the sharing of military secrets with the enemy. In the 16th century, a torture method involved restraining people in a head clamp and letting water droplets fall on their heads. Over time, these droplets felt like heavy blows and drove people to complete madness.

Fortunately, sound can also bring pleasure. Most people have their favorite songs that give them energy or bring them joy. Scientifically, music can have the same effects as sex and drugs due to the dopamine production it can stimulate.
